Users interrupt frequently, and only about twenty-seven percent of tool calls happen without human oversight. New users start with twenty percent auto-approval rates but gradually increase to over fifty percent as they gain experience.

This contrasts sharply with benchmark claims. The METR evaluation suggests AI agents can handle five hours of human-equivalent work. But Anthropic's real-world data tells a different story—one where humans and AI collaborate in short bursts rather than long autonomous runs.

The pattern makes sense when you consider what's missing. LeCun highlighted this gap perfectly—AI can pass bar exams and solve advanced math problems, yet we still don't have fully autonomous cars or household robots. A teenager learns to drive in twenty hours. No AI system can replicate that yet.

The missing piece? What LeCun calls a "world model"—the intuitive understanding of physical reality that humans develop from infancy through constant observation and interaction.

The Production Reality: Why Speed Trumps Sophistication

Google's Jeff Dean revealed why the company runs AI search on Flash models rather than their most capable systems. The answer is simple—latency is the critical constraint for running AI at scale.

As AI capabilities rapidly advance and funding rounds reach unprecedented scales, the fundamental questions remain unchanged. The technical progress is undeniable, but the human choices about how to deploy these tools will ultimately determine their impact.
